Email & News FAQ - Page 2  Page 1

Why does my mail client only download (x) messages of (x) and then times out?

This is because the message it is attempting to download is either very large (perhaps someone sent you a picture or large file) or corrupt. To determine which it is, use the WebPOP utility to view your messages. Look for the first message (probably starting from the bottom, where the oldest messages are) that did not successfully download to your computer. If the size of the message is very large, and you wish to download it, you will just have to wait while your email program retrieves the entire message in order to receive any messages that came in after it. If you don't care to download it to your email program, you can delete it in WebPop. If the message is not large, it is probably corrupt, and the only remedy is to delete the message. You should then be able to download the rest of the messages using your email program.

What causes corrupt messages?

Your mail can go through many computers to arrive at its destination. The mail is broken down into small packets that are sent separately. When they arrive at the final destination, they are reassembled into a whole message. Sometimes the data portion of a packet can get jumbled and when it is reassembled with the rest of them, it does not quite make sense. When you go to download your email, your email program attempts to decode the information and can not make sense of it. It will sit there trying to do it until it times out.

Why do I keep getting the same email messages over and over each time I check mail?

When the email program retrieves messages from the RollaNet server, it will download copies of all of the messages to your computer before it deletes the messages from the server. If the program is interrupted before all messages are retrieved, either because of a timeout or because you cancel the process, the mail does not get cleared off of the RollaNet server. The next time you attempt to receive email it will download the same messages, plus any new ones received. This usually happens if email is corrupt and the program is unable to complete the download, or when a large message is being downloaded, and because the program appears to have frozen up, the user cancels the download. Refer to the question above for information on to resolve this problem.

How come I keep getting disconnected after sending mail?

You probably have your email program set to hang up your connection after performing a send and receive. To fix this in Outlook Express, click on Tools, then click on the Dial-up tab. Remove the check from the box labeled "Hang up after performing send and receive". Click Apply and then cick OK. That should resolve the problem. For other email programs, check the Help files for more information on where to find this setting.

What does the following error message mean? "Can't find host: rollanet.org".

Most likely your machine is attempting to check mail but you are not connected to the Internet. It is also possible that the mail server is not responding to your request. If you are connected, launch your web browser and see if you can bring up web pages. If you can, then you will need to check your mail settings. If you are unable to view any pages, then you are having trouble with your Internet connection. Click here to answer questions regarding not being able to browse or bring up web pages. If you have done everything suggested in that section you will most likely have to contact the HelpDesk for assistance.

Why can't I send/receive email since I installed Antivirus software?

Without going into technical details, some antivirus software programs have a feature which scans email for viruses while downloading. Unfortunately, to do this the antivirus program changes your email settings so that email is intercepted by the antivirus software before it gets to your email program. This change in configuration will NOT work with RollaNet, so you must either disable the email scan portion of your antivirus software or uninstall the program. You should contact the software vendor for assistance with this, not RollaNet. However, the RollaNet HelpDesk can help you to restore the correct email settings once you have disabled the email virus scan, or you can refer to the information on our Software Configuration page for the correct settings.
