Windows 95 Dial-up Scripting for RollaNet

Some members using the original version of Windows 95 are still using the clunky terminal window to log on to RollaNet. This log on method requires you to type in your userid and password each time you dial in, and pressing F7 to continue the process. However, now there are easier solutions. You can do one of two things: switch to PAP authentication (recommended), or use Windows 95 Dial-up scripting to automate the connection process.

Dial-up scripting is a useful tool for automating the input of userid and password when connecting to RollaNet. Since RollaNet now supports PAP authentication, we no longer recommend the use of dial-up scripting. If you follow the instructions in the Windows 95 Configuration for RollaNet Dial-up you will usually not need a script. These instruction are provided just in case you have a modem that does not work correctly with PAP authentication.

If you already have dial-up networking installed (look under Start:Programs:Accessories) go directly to step 3.

1) First, if you haven't already done so check out our instructions for Installing & Configuring Windows 95/98 Dial-up Networking.

2) Download and install Microsoft's Dial-Up Scripting Software for Windows 95. (It's a freebie).

3) Download rollanet.scp, a script file (for PPP) written specifically for RollaNet's server. Use MS Dial-Up Scripting software to associate the rollanet.scp with the dial-up connection you configured for RollaNet.

Thanks to Dennis Yates for the script.

Switch from Dial-up Scripting to PAP authentication

If you have been using Dial-up Scripting to connect to RollaNet and would like to change to the PAP method of authentication (this is the method recommended by RollaNet), follow these instructions. To use PAP authentication you need to do two things:

1) Remove the checkmark in the "Bring up terminal windows after dialing" box. To change the terminal window setting go to: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Dialup Networking Click ONCE on your RollaNet icon. Choose the File menu and then properties. There should be a "Configure" button - click it. Choose the "Options" tab On this screen there should be two options for the terminal window. One for "before dialing" and one for "after dialing". Make sure there is no checkmark in either of these.

2) Then you need to make sure you have your username and password correctly entered in the Connect To dialog box - that's the little window that asks for username, password, phone number and that has the CONNECT button at the bottom. In the username field, make sure you enter your userid, NOT your email address or your full name, and that both the userid and password are entered in lower case, without spaces. Check the "Save Password" box. NOTE: If the Connect To dialog box does not pop up when you double-click on your RollaNet icon, do the following: single-click on the RollaNet icon, then from the menu select Connections -> Settings. In the box that pops up, check "Prompt to Use Dial-up Networking". Once you have successfully logged on to RollaNet several times, you can go back and check the "Don't prompt for Dial-up Networking" box to bypass the Connect to dialog box.
